Steven Anderson makes performances and paintings that focus on the physical reality of the body. Practical research into folk culture performance of Scots oral traditional singing and flamenco song and dance, aims to inform an embodied expression of mortality. As an ongoing activity Steven collects photographic images of bodies displayed or gesturing. For Beyond Here Lies North, he will make a painting in the gallery from one of these images. Painted in situ, using only black oil on white ground the formation of the painting reflects it’s own finality. Using raw untrained vocals he will also perform a song based on creative writing made in response to the source photo. The texts are written as a method of tapping into subconscious archetypal imagery, which builds on the psychological value of the practice as a whole.
